Hellebores: hardy and easy to grow

Michigan to Oregon have resulted in new strains for North Texas consumers, with more to come. Some local retailers have a handful of plants now, but North Haven Gardens took delivery of fresh stock from a Washington grower as recently as Tuesday. “We try to get at least one really big shipment in fall of the Christmas roses and a big shipment in January of the late winter-early spring bloomers,” says NHG buyer Sandi Schwedler. “It’s become a fun thing to search out and find those new varieties that nobody else has.” She is referring to the Wedding Party, Winter Jewels and Honeymoon series. Their highlights include showy colors such as dark, almost black, purple; ruby reds; dark pinks; and bi-colors, with double flowers, freckles, whiskers and other markings. “Seattle, where these were grown, had a really hard summer,” Schwedler says. “Up there, growers can put them out in full sun. Quite a few burned up.” Still, NHG has plenty of new colors in stock. In recent years, the North Dallas nursery has sold about 2,500 plants a year. By planting them now, they will bloom in your garden instead of on the store’s tables. Mariana Greene is the former garden editor at The Dallas Morning News. Find her at Facebook.com/ mariana.greene.3. Hellebores: What you need to know Hellebores do not mind our alkaline soil. Sometimes, however, greenhouse-grown plants may begin to look chlorotic. A dose of an organic acidic fertilizer, such as Holly-tone, clears that up. Otherwise, Sandi Schwedler of North Haven Gardens recommends an organic, all-purpose fertilizer for established plants, applied when new growth begins. In the fall, apply a thick layer of compost to act as mulch and to decompose into soil nutrients. Deadheading hellebores will not initiate new flowers. Flowers have ornamental value for several months, even when they fade to a dull or greenish white. To enjoy flowers indoors, advises wholesale grower Skagit Gardens, many snip off just the heads and float them in a shallow bowl, like a Southerner’s habit with camellias. To display hellebores in a vase, wait until the stamens have dropped off the flowers. If cut before that stage, flowers and leaves will collapse. (Dallas Morning News)
