James (Jim) W King

MUSCATINE — James (Jim) W King died at University Hospitals, Iowa City, Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, after a brief illness surrounded by his wife, five children and his grandchildren. Cremation rites have been facilitated by the FCS Life Transition and Cremation Center, located within Muscatine Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services Home in Muscatine. A celebration of life will be held in July in Salem, Iowa. Jim was born in Salem on Dec. 13, 1935, one of 12 children of Marion and Gladys (White) King. He married his high school sweetheart, Grace Paris, on June 10, 1955, and graduated from Parsons College with a major in business. Jim and Grace lived in Davenport before moving to Muscatine in 1979, where they owned and operated King-Leuck Insurance Agency. Jean Ellen (Dobbs) Kurtenbach Brookings July 26, 1939 – Dec. 24, 2015

Ft Campbell, Ky., where their daughter Jackie was born.Following her husband’s dream to coach wrestling, they moved to Muscatine, Iowa. Another coaching opportunity led them to Keokuk, Iowa, where they bought their first home and their son Steve was born. They spent one year back at South Dakota State University living in married student housing. In 1969, they moved to Sioux Falls, and then returned to Brookings in 1981.Jean cherished all the friendships she developed throughout her life. She continued to keep in touch with the friends she made in school in Colman, and made new friends in all the places that she called home or traveled to throughout the years. A highlight of every year for Jean was receiving Christmas cards. She would spend hours writing out personal letters to send to all her friends. She treasured all the letters and cards she received.Jean enjoyed accompanying Frank as he traveled to conventions or other work-related activities for Daktronics. They developed great friendships with the people that they met during their travels. They were fortunate to have great opportunities to see and do many fun and interesting things together.Especially important to them was to make sure they took time to stop and see any family or friends who might be on the way or living in the area they were visiting. Jean especially enjoyed being a part of Frank’s large family. She looked forward to the Kurtenbach family reunion, weddings, and many other family gatherings and celebrations.When she wasn’t busy raising Jackie and Steve, she went back to school and graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, and then eventually worked at Minnegasco in Sioux Falls and then at Northern Border Pipeline in Brookings. After retiring, she enjoyed helping Steve with his businesses. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, Reed Kotz, Phoebe Schwartz, Peyton and Stephen Glagola, and Mia and Landon Hugo, her son-in-law, Michael Schwartz (Minneapolis) and daughter-in-law, Amy Kurtenbach (Darnestown, Md.).As a wife of a coach and the mother of athletes, she spent many weekends and evenings in the bleachers watching sports. Marilyn “Lyn” Elizabeth (Harris) Jackson

CEDAR RAPIDS — Marilyn “Lyn” Elizabeth (Harris) Jackson, 88, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Muscatine, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church, Muscatine. Visitation and luncheon will be noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Private family burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park. Marilyn Elizabeth Harris was born June 21, 1927, in Buffalo Prairie, Ill., the daughter of W. Claude and Elizabeth A. (Rausch) Harris. Marilyn graduated from Muscatine High School as salutatorian of the Class of 1945. She attended The State University of Iowa, where she was affiliated with Gamma Alpha Chi (advertising honorary fraternity), and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1949. On Aug. 14, 1949, Marilyn was united in marriage to Ralph LeRoy Jackson in Muscatine. She worked at Harmony House in Chicago during a summer in college. She worked in the advertising department at the Iowa City Press Citizen after college graduation, and briefly for the Muscatine Journal. (Muscatine Journal)

Robert Giguere, corn miller, dies at 64

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, U.S. -- Robert J. Giguere, president of Iowa Corn Processors, died Jan. 4 following an extended illness. He was 64. Born in Muscatine, Iowa, U.S., Giguere moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, U.S. and then Kansas City, Missouri, U.S. as a young boy. He graduated from Rockhurst High School in Kansas City and from Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin, U.S. in 1975. After spending several years away from the milling industry, including one year teaching history and economics at Notre Dame de Sion in Kansas City, Giguere and his family moved to Marion, Indiana, U.S., to begin work in the corn milling business. In 1998, he moved to western Iowa, U.S., building a new dry corn company in Glidden – Iowa Corn Processors. Giguere was a member of the board of directors of the North American Millers’ Association. Survivors include Giguere’s wife of 41 years Rosie Molinari Giguere; a daughter Nicole; two sons Christopher (and his wife Bree) and Patrick (Kelly); five grandchildren, Anthony, Regan, Tristan, Finley, and Lincoln. He also is survived by his parents Margery and Jim Giguere, and his four siblings Beth (Rusty), Paul (Betsy), Mary (David), and Ann (David). We toured the 19th student-built home in Davenport, two homes constructed by Andy Seitz and Mike Jasper that were in the annual fall parade of homes and three homes built by the city of Davenport in an attempt to boost a needy neighborhood. 7. Alessandra Toniazzo rented an apartment in the Wells Fargo Building, formerly Davenport Bank, while Corinne Henyan moved into the upstairs of a commercial building in Port Byron. Kim and Ryan Woodward reconfigured an old barn into "small living" space and Karolyn Williams turned a Walcott carpenter's shop into her home. 8. Technology. Martin and Celeste Wilkinson explained their electricity-producing solar array, while Eric and Missy Dippel shared their 4K ultra high-definition television. All live in Bettendorf. 9. Special occasions. Mike Novak and Blake Schaeffer, both Davenport, showed off their Halloween inflatables and truly Haunted House, respectively. Kim Parein-Rodriguez of Moline brought stockings back to Festival of Trees; and Juan and Mayra Zetina created a tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe at their Rock Island home. Gardens. In Davenport, we visited the color-filled garden of Ken Krumwiede, the 'slippery slope' of Cynthia Westerfield and the native roots yard of Lee Ann Wille.
