Sep 8, 2017Sunflowers prepare Barrington Hills farm for organic future
Barbara MacArthur, who with her late husband, Alex, ran the Strathmore Organic Farm at the same location on Spring Creek Road in McHenry County. Barbara MacArthur, who died last year, was a passionate pioneer of organic farming, decades ahead of its rising popularity today. But the land passed into other hands between the MacArthurs and the Davises, requiring work to restore its organic status.Farm manager Russ Grollemond began working for Barbara MacArthur in the mid-'90s and now does the same job for the Davises. He said he was trained in conventional farming techniques that use chemicals and are far less labor-intensive, but he learned everything he now practices in organic farming from Barbara MacArthur.
Russ Grollemond of Sycamore farms the new sunflower fields in Barrington Hills with the help of his John Deere tractor. The seeds will have a variety of uses, including for bird feed.
- Mark Welsh Staff PhotographerGrollemond was a quick convert to recognizing it as a healthier way of farming."It's more complicated than most people realize," he said. "You don't get a big yield and you're always fighting weeds."And organic farms don't use genetically modified seeds that are lethal to insects, both helpful and harmful, he said.On Wednesday, he knew he saw a lot more bees pollinating the sunflowers than occurs with conventionally farmed crops. While organic farming makes large-scale cultivation less efficient, growing demand among consumers has opened new opportunities for smaller operators."It's becoming more and more popular because smaller farmers are recognizing it as a way to make money," Grollemond said. For example, Dawn Davis, who is on the board of Brookfield Zoo, said she's in early talks to provide organic foods for some of the animals there. But as much experie... Jul 27, 2017Gwin Mitchell Paden: Flowers are bright, but not all is delightful in Lodi
April 15 is when it collects all its presents! Here’s something more serious and, to me, very interesting: an article by Ken Olsen about Fort McHenry in Maryland. Most of us know this fort because it was where our flag was flying when the fort was under attack by the British in the war of 1812, and about which flag Francis Scott Key wrote the words that became our national anthem. Later, the fort became a Civil War detention center for Confederate soldiers and sympathizers. Just before World War I, the city of Baltimore leased it from the federal government and turned the grounds into “a taboo-smashing co-ed park and swimming beach.”Things changed after the United States entered World War I, and a military hospital was built among the historic military buildings. Fort McHenry had always been important strategically because it guarded the southern entrance to Baltimore Harbor. Its location was strategic for the hospital, also as it was close to major ports and was served by major railroads. The 3,000-bed hospital itself was known for its medical and surgical work and for its rehabilitation program. Thousands of volunteers from Baltimore came to help. By the time it closed, this hospital had laid the groundwork for what we now know as the Veterans Administration. It is now a historical monument, easily reached on the road from Baltimore to Annapolis. I know; I’ve been there.•••And one to end with: "Protecting our environment is not a luxury we can choose to enjoy, but a matter of survival. ... Peace in our world depends on our relating to each other with compassion." — The Dalai Lama... (Lodi News-Sentinel)
