Oct 27, 2016Football notes: Kristan Flowers hopes to help Elgin see the light
While several teams are scrambling to get into the playoffs, Westminster Christian (5-3, 5-3) became playoff-eligible Saturday with a 27-2 win over South Beloit in the Northeastern Athletic.
Westminster Christian coach John Davis tipped his hat to his team for rebounding from a tough loss.
"I was still feeling the pain from that last-second loss to (Hiawatha) the week before, the worst game that ever lived," Davis said.
Westminster lost 24-21 to on a last-second field goal after injuries left defensive replacements struggling with new responsibilities.
"The defense really gets the credit for beating South Beloit," Davis said. "They were ready for anything."
Besides an 82-yard TD run, safety/linebacker Xavier Brown made two interceptions and recovered a fumble, and Scotty Graziano made two interceptions.
"Offensively, we had some great blocking from Jake Miller and Spencer Feerer at tight end," Davis said.
G-K clincher: Genoa-Kingston (8-0, 7-0) made an easy adjustment to facing the former Big Northern West schools this year after the Big Northern shrank from two divisions to one.
"We played Big Northern West teams every year in nonconference anyway, so it was no really big thing," Cogs coach Bill McCarty said. "We knew all about these teams."
The Cogs finish Friday at Mendota (1-7, 1-6) and could go unbeaten in the Big Northern with Byron (8-0, 7-0). The two would share the title since the top two teams do not face each other in this 11-team conference.
Rockford Christian is slated to leave in 2018 to become independent, making for an even schedule.
