Dec 10, 2020Washington Liquors Closes + Florists' Telegraph Delivery Blooms: The Florist You May Have Missed - hobokengirl.com
Hoboken History Museum’s website shows the storefront in 1955. The sign looks crisp, almost freshly painted, and above it hangs a neon sign emblazoned with the word “Florist,” which welcomed customers strolling along Washington Street. The photo was taken during Hoboken’s Centennial Parade.
Florists’ Telegraph Delivery was founded in 1910 by John A. Valentine in Rochester, NY. The Hoboken store at 211 Washington may have opened in the late 1940s since the name ‘Interflora’ was first used. Interflora described the merging between the US, British, and European Telegraph lines.
In 1933, Florists’ Telegraph Delivery entered their first float in the famous Rose Parade, an event held in Pasadena since 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club. Through the years, celebrities, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Rosemary Clooney, have been spokespersons for Florists’ Telegraph Delivery.
Advertisements of the 1940s and 1950s depicted families and loved ones receiving flowers, usually accompanied by the slogan: “Say It With Flowers By Wire.” Their ‘Mercury Man’ logo became synonymous with sending flowers. Sometimes he was even depicted holding a bow and arrow like Cupid. In the 1960s the company changed its name to Florists’ Transworld Delivery to emphasize their global reach and modernization.
Over 100 years later, Florists’ Telegraph Delivery continues to operate. There is a chance that you may have even purchased their flowers without knowing! Flowers Direct {UK}, Pro Flowers, Personal Creations, and others make up only a portion of their brand. Their headquarters is now in Downers Grove, Illinois, and was recently taken private after Nexus Capital Management acquired it.
CoolVines, a Princeton-based wine shop, is moving into the space. Currently, CoolVines has 2 locations in Jersey City and one in downtown Newark. This will be their first shop in the Mile Square. The transition has allowed for a small piece of Hoboken’s history to emerge briefly before being covered up once more. W...

Feb 27, 2020Muncie Origins: Normandy Flower Shop continues family florist tradition - Ball State Daily News
From the outside looking in, Normandy Flower Shop bursts with color from its bright yellow door and neon window lights to a sea of pinks and reds from its flower arrangements and bouquets.
In the flower shop’s back room, foliage paints the floor green. Judy Benken, owner of Normandy Flower Shop, can be found in this room taking orders, making flower arrangements and calling suppliers.
As a third-generation florist, Benken isn’t new to the flower business. She said she grew up in her father’s flower shop because it was attached to their house, and “there wasn’t any getting away from it.”
“I probably started working when I was around 12 [doing simple little things],” Benken said. “When I started [delivering flowers] after school, I was 16.”
After Benken moved from Muncie to Ohio with her husband, she said, she thought she had left the flower business behind her. However, once the holidays rolled around, Benken said, she found herself working for a flower shop in Ohio because she missed the “chaos and crazy” of the season...
Nov 9, 2019On Gardening: Hydrangea varieties add long-lasting color to the garden - Sarasota Herald-Tribune
By Norman WinterTribune News ServiceElectric blue and neon purple in The Garden Guy's hydrangeas made 2019 an unforgettable year in the garden. These colors came courtesy of Let's Dance Rave hydrangeas from Proven Winners. We've all seen those photos in catalogs and brochures making us wonder if those flowers really will look like that for me, and I can say, yes, they did! This was the Year of the Hydrangea at The Garden Guy's house. I planted 25 of them, best I can count, representing three species and seven varieties. They all performed very well, but I want to tout three in particular. Let's Dance Rave literally stole the show in the garden, which is hard to do when companion plants were Compact Electric Orange SunPatiens. You can immediately gather that this garden was a little on the gaudy side and perhaps perfect for garden party dance.Let's Dance Rave will get 36 inches tall and as wide, and it is a rebloomer. I suspect it may get a little taller in the deep South. It is recommended for zones 5-9, and as with other hydrangea macroph...
Aug 22, 2019Cig Harvey engages the senses with 'Eating Flowers' - Press Herald
The exhibition, “Eating Flowers: Sensations of Cig Harvey,” is a mid-career survey of 70 photographs, video, neon and written word pieces. Collectively, the work addresses Harvey’s interest in exploring the sensations of touch, taste, sound, smell and memory. Her photos are full of mystery and sometimes feel like the tangible expression of a dream.
“Birds of New England, Rockport, Maine” by Cig Harvey.
The exhibition is an explosion of color and emotions that spark a riot of sensations. Harvey’s large-scale photographs capture individual moments of intrigue – a woman walking on the beach in the fog, apples frozen on a branch, a self-portrait of the artist poised on the side of channel marker, hovering over the water and preparing to dive. All are ordinary moments that feel spectacular and surreal.
It’s a dense collection of photographs and framed narrative text, hung salon style with frames abutting frames in the museum’s large light-filled gallery, which opens to the ocean, and an adjacent smaller gallery that is darker and more intimate.
Harvey is a British-born artist and educator, who lives and works in Rockport. She’s written three books, and text has long been a part of Harvey’s creative expression. With this exhibition, for the first time, Harvey treats her written-word work – phrases and vignettes about life and her philosophies – in a similar manner to how she treats her photographic prints, using the letterpress printing technique to make them, then framing and hanging them among the photos. In the past she produced her written work for gallery exhibitions with vinyl lettering ...
