This pretty plant is dangerous — and it's growing in more than a dozen Mass. communities

Acton, Blandford, Brimfield, Dover, Hinsdale, Lee, Martha's Vineyard, New Marlborough, Peru, Southwick, Stoughton, Sutton, and West Springfield, and control efforts are still in progress, according to the state Department of Agricultural Resources. Get Fast Forward in your inbox: Forget yesterday's news. Get what you need today in this early-morning email. However, the plant has been eradicated in several other communities, including Boston. "It's a very large plant with a large, flowering stalk that towers over people, like an umbrella of white flowers. It's very showy. I think that's what made people plant it years and years ago," Forman Orth said. While beautiful, hogweed can be extremely dangerous. It produces phototoxic sap that, after being exposed to sunlight, forms painful, fluid-filled blisters on human skin, she said. Experts say it can also cause blindness if it gets in your eyes.It also poses some ecological issues. Advertisement Once hogweed - which thrives along streams and riverbanks - sprouts flowers, it begins to die, Forman Orth said. Because it's top-heavy, it tips over and pulls up soil along riverbanks, causing soil erosion, she said. The plant recently made headlines after Virginia researchers discovered it had landed in the state for the first time last week, officials said.Researchers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University acknowledged that while the plant - which was found in Clarke County on June 12 - can be toxic, they believe it was planted intentionally decades ago and hasn't spread since, according to a statement from the university. The plant has also invaded several other states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Oregon, and Washington, according to research from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It first landed in the United States from Asia and Europe in the early 20th century as an ornamental garden plant, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation said.Fortunately, Forman Orth said, th...

20th annual West Springfield Holiday Tour of Homes to benefit Boys and Girls Club

WEST SPRINGFIELD — Susan A. Zukowski been taking her mother on the Holiday Tour of Homes for more than 10 years, but this year her home will be one of those featured on the annual fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of West Springfield. "We love seeing the different decorating ideas, and it puts you in the holiday spirit," the West Springfield resident said. Her French Country-style home was built in 1995 has "a touch of the holiday in each room," she said. "We like to start our decorating the day after Thanksgiving when all our children are back home." She and her husband, Art Zukowski, grew up in West Springfield and wanted to be on the tour because the Boys and Girls Club "is such a great thing for our town," she said. Though they don't have any special Christmas collections to showcase on the tour, they hope visitors to their home will enjoy the warmth of the gas fireplace and their nine-foot Christmas tree. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (MassLive.com)

Springfield Museums feature living art in Festival of Flowers

This year's sponsors include Durocher Florist in West Springfield, Gardeners on the Green in Longmeadow, Pat Parker & Sons Florist in Springfield, Pennock Floral in West Springfield, Randall's Farm and Greenhouse in Ludlow and Dave DiRico's Golf and Racquet in Springfield. "We can't thank them enough for their support and everything they do. They really get so inspired and produce beautiful pieces," Whitney said. This year, the Venetian Ball theme will incorporate masks worn by the models with a variety of flowers ranging from delphiniums and calla lilies to birds of paradise, succulents, spray roses and more. Besides admiring the flowers and the models, there will be plenty of activities to do in all of the museums, as well as signature cocktails to try. Guests can wander through the museums and see Peter Soule, of Durocher Florists, working on a floral arrangement demonstration. Erick Hirsh, of Big Y, will be creating pastry flowers. The Log Cabin will be serving up rosewater shooters with a variety of edible flowers. There will be a hands-on art project for guests to try, a DJ, an acoustic guitarist playing live music, a watercolor artist, an origami floral arrangement on display and much more. Moss Garden Design of Springfield will sell bouquets from a small flower cart Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. "We are encouraging people to roam through all of the museums and see all of the incredible pieces created by florists and designers who are all from Western Massachusetts," Murray said. Culture & Cocktails is a 21-and-over event and tends to sell out, so anyone interested in purchasing tickets should contact the museums. Tickets are $5 for museum members and $15 for non-members. Admission to the museums is free if you are a city resident, but the fee for the event is still applicable.
