Sep 21, 2016Walk to End Alzheimer's conducted under pristine conditions Sunday
OWATONNA — On a Sunday morning with pristine weather, numerous walkers gathered at Mineral Springs Park for this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
“We had 192 participants on Sunday, and we raised $35,277,” said Debbie Eddy, community engagement manager of Alzheimer’s Association Southern Minnesota.
She added that the association is still accepting donations, which can be mailed to the Rochester office at 3224 6th Ave. NE Rochester, MN, 55906.
“This walk brings a community together so people know they’re not alone,” said Sue Spalding, the CEO for the Minnesota and North Dakota chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “This disease can be very isolating, but you’re not alone.”
All walks across her region, including this one in Owatonna, have experienced “tremendous growth” in recent years due to increased awareness of Alzheimer’s and the Alzheimer’s Association, Spalding said.
“For so long, people thought it was normal aging, but it’s a disease,” she said.

Apr 22, 2016Minnesota Historical Society pays tribute to Prince
Minnesota icon on Post-It notes.
"I wrote, "Awesome music" because I really like Prince's music," said Lauren Thamert, a sixth grader from Owatonna.
Many of the kids who were at the museum and who saw the display were not familiar with Prince's music. Mary Kay Storhaug of Andover took the time to teach her four children about Prince's legacy.
Gavin Walerius, a sixth grader from Owatonna, listened to Prince's music with his mother today saying, "My mom, she really liked him as a musician... I heard his music... today and it seems really cool."
Scher added, "It's very important for younger generations to understand their history and it's been great to be able to see people who grew up with Prince, who now have children, to be able to bring their kids here to learn more about him."
The Minnesota Historical Society is selecting more Prince memorabilia they hope to put on display along with Prince's Purple Rain suit. According to Scher, they are not sure when those items will be on exhibit but visitors can catch the suit on display for at least the next week.
