Don't let the name fool you—Floral Park Market is one of the best places to grocery shop - Atlanta Magazine

Plus, it’s open seven days a week.Perched just above the Howell Mill Road reservoirs on a street nobody ends up on by accident, the store looks like it belongs in a quaint country town. I passed through tiny rooms crammed full of Tunisian towels, letterpress cards, and other carefully curated items and eventually ended up in a huge open space where tables are piled with attractive displays of baked goods and jarred pantry staples and walls are lined with refrigerator and freezer units loaded with items you won’t find anywhere else. There are no big brands anywhere, and way out in the back is a cool room with fresh flowers and pristine produce. In 1997, James Olsen established a wholesale flower business, which he eventually moved into a former bakery on the Westside. Michelle, his wife of 22 years, grew up on a dairy farm in rural Connecticut; her passion for fresh, local food pushed the flower store to pivot to consumables in the fall of 2016. A vegetarian herself, she doesn’t mind selling fresh sausages, plump organic chicken leg quarters, and big crimson steaks cut from grass-fed local beef. The prepared food is indeed worth the trip alone, ranging from turmeric hummus and dehydrated basil crackers (from healthy-eating guru David Sweeney of the late, lamented Dynamic Dish) to beauteous cold cucumber soup (from Simply Fresh), delicate fresh macarons (from Deborah Johnson, who lived in Paris for more than 20 years and was schooled at Le Cordon Bleu) to frozen wood-fired pizza (from a Brooklyn outfit that got its start on Shark Tank). But that’s hardly the market’s sole selling point. There is a station for dispensing locally made Golda’s CBD kombucha on tap, shelves of local H+F breads next to two crockpots of boiled peanuts, and a large display of organic hand-milled grains. Floral Park Market doesn’t feel like a glorified convenience store. Everything from the spicy Portuguese tinned sardines to the roasted pecans whose proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels has been carefully sourced. If your ideal shopping list includes freshly baked banan...

Howell Lacy - Obituary - Legacy.com

Howell Kent Lacy, 83, passed away on August 25th 2020 in Chesapeake, Virginia. Kent, or "Lacy" to his friends, is survived by his daughter, Cris L. Lacy and his sisters Ruth L. Smith and Kay L. Brinkley.Born in Georgia, Kent grew up in Farmville, Virginia to parents Howell E. Lacy and Nina C. Lacy - both of whom preceded him in death. From an early age, he had an innate acumen and curiosity for all things mechanical. These attributes were put to good use…first on Model A and Model T Fords, and later on his "first class" restorations of Austin Healeys. In the years between, Kent's driveway and garage were always occupied by something unique and unusual. Aided by his background in art and architecture during his tenure at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Old Dominion University, he turned all of his cars into works of art. Influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, Kent always favored "sleek, clean lines" over "things that look like they were made with a hatchet". In the 1970's, during Kent's...

History flowers in tiny heritage petunia - Warwick Beacon

By JOHN HOWELL Now 90 and as sharp as ever when it comes to times gone by, Henry Brown remembers gleefully accepting the job his father offered him. He was 12 years old and he would be collecting the garbage of homes on Gaspee Point. The job would take him from house to house on the property that is still owned by the Spring Green Corporation and leased to homeowners, all part of an estate with deep Brown family roots. Brown and his wife Ann live in a house overlooking Occupasstuxet Cove, the southern end of Gaspee Point and the sandy spit that once was Greene Island. From his porch, it’s easy to imagine not much has changed with the exception of the disappearance of the island after decades of battering storms and a few severe hurricanes. The cove is still. In the distance is the distinguishable outline of Conimicut Light. But it’s something much closer that holds Henry’s attention and is one of those bits of history that give community character. It’s a tiny blue bloom, an anemic...

Flowers, mulch on display outside put Lowe's store at odds with Genoa Township

READ MORE: Brighton purse designer opening store in Howell READ MORE: 'Cutthroat Kitchen' winner in Howell's food truck rally READ MORE: April 2018 restaurant inspections for Livingston County According to Genoa Township Ordinance Officer Sharon Stone, Lowe's had not complied with the terms of a development agreement between the store and the township. After repeated non-compliance with the township's rules for outdoor storage, township officials denied them a waiver to allow them to display plants and mulch outside the garden center for the season, Stone said. While the township has never fined Lowe's, the store has violated the rules several times over the years, Stone said. Lowe's company officials did not respond to requests for comment. "It's a recurring issue," Stone said. She said she is aware of at least four years when the township had to pressure the store to comply. "We don't allow any outdoor storage, and they have to keep things under canopies, like tractors, and everything has to be inside the cages," Stone said. "We used to grant them a waiver to do the plants and the mulch, but after all their violations, (the township board) decided to (deny) that special use this season." Another retailer, Home Depot at 3330 E. Grand River Ave., had its special land use waiver revoked in 2016 and was fined $2,900 over similar issues, according to Stone. The store is in compliance this year, she said. Home Depot store management declined to comment. Home Depot corporate representatives did not return a message left seeking comment. Family Farm and Home, which plans to open a new store this year at 3685 E. Grand River Avenue, ran into a hurdle with township planners while they were reviewing site plans. Township planners' concerns about outdoor storage led to a public hearing on the proposed store getting tabled in February. The company changed its site plan, added screening, and township planners approved th...

Kendis Flowers' family is not convinced police are innocent

However, they say that the video does not show anything related to Flowers’ murder. On Wednesday the media asked Commander Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett to confirm whether the department has assisted the family in that manner. He said he did not know if that had happened and would not go into any further detail as the department is working to solidify their case for court proceedings. Inspector Wilfred Ferrufino, C.I.B, Belize City: “Well I know that there is an individual wanted in regards to Mr. Flowers’ Murder. I cannot comment on regards to any wanted poster and any situation in regards to any wanted poster but we do have someone that is wanted in connection with that murder that is all that I can say.”What sorts of measures have been put in place to prevent families of Kendis Flowers to take action into their own hands with this person of interest?Inspector Wilfred Ferrufino, C.I.B, Belize City: “I believe there has been I know that there has been some mediation done by Deputy Compol Mr. Williams and that there are other measures put in place, I think more patrols have been put in place in regards to and of course it is being followed closely and any additional resources that need to be put in place will be done.”As we mentioned earlier, police continue to seek one person of interest.
