Mourners gather at park to remember UNLV student found shot to death - Las Vegas Review-Journal

Scores of faces glowed in the flicker of candlelight. Friends and family gathered Thursday night at Desert Horizons Park in North Las Vegas to remember Paula Davis, the 19-year-old woman who was found shot to death at the park on Sept. 6. They shared stories of Davis’ kindness, talent, sense of humor and love for others. “There’s no string of words that can come from my lips to reach your ears that I feel does justice to the person I knew and loved,” 20-year-old Joseph Rios told the crowd. A makeshift memorial for Davis sat in parking spaces at the park near Simmons Street and Gowan Road. A black-and-white photo of her in a camouflage shirt stood above flowers and candles that spelled out the UNLV student’s name. Standing near the memorial, Davis’ father, Sean, thanked the detectives who worked on his daughter’s case. North Las Vegas family mourns mother, 2 siblings shot to death

Susan Nash’s daughter Dejona’e Nash, 20, and her son Deonte’ Nash, 31, of North Las Vegas. Their deaths were ruled homicides. Vases with flowers lined the interior of their house Tuesday afternoon, while mourning wreaths displayed at a vigil Monday evening sat in the corner of the living space by the back door. The surviving Nash brothers sat in the living room along a low wall decorated with a few vases. They occasionally took sips from red plastic cups as they spoke about their family, remembering the loved ones whose lives were taken Sunday. They asked people to donate to a GoFundMe page to support burial costs and help the family keep the house. “My momma was a queen. My sister was a princess. They need to go out that way,” De’Andre Nash said. “My big brother was a king.” His big brother, Deonte’, would poke his siblings and do anything he could to make them laugh or smile, De’Andre Nash said. He would walk around the house with his ear buds in and sing along to a song that nobody else could hear. He was a much better dancer than a singer, but that wouldn’t stop him from singing songs “word for word,” De’Angelo Nash said. And he loved animals, his brothers said, to the point where he’d had “over 200” animals — including dogs, fish, birds, lizards, a snake and a rabbit — during the years they lived on Rejoice Street. He wanted to get a crocodile, but his mom wouldn’t let him, his brothers said. “He was our Doctor Doolittle,” De’Angelo Nash said. De’Andre Nash’s 8-year-old son, De’Anthony, said losing his grandmother has left him feeling “horribly sad.” His grandma took them shopping for Halloween toys and candy last month, he said. And their uncle let them play with his many pets, including his dog Jamaica and his iguana. Wildflower hike bursts with colors at Spring Mountain Ranch

Low caught a California chorus frog tadpole in his hands and found a darkling beetle that he passed around. The kids were especially fascinated with both.As hikers traversed the dirt trail, Low warned about cactuses, which “can be aggressive this time of year.” At one point, he had people stop and smell a flower root.He picked up the plant and had people guess what it smelled like. Some people guessed beets or carrots; others thought it just smelled familiar.It was a wild radish.“It’s such a familiar smell,” Low said, “but out of context, it’s kind of hard to place.”As people passed by bushy bright orange flowers, Low identified them as globe mallows. They’re from the family of plants that produces marshmallow flavor, he said.By a stand of 300-year-old ash trees, Low had people rub together dry leaves called yerba mansa to release their scent.“It smells like black pepper, maybe a type of spice,” someone said.“There’s no wrong answer,” Low said. “I think it smells like spicy dirt.”After the two-hour trek, hikers left with new knowledge.“This is a really informative tour,” Las Vegan Sara Greco said. “It’s nice to get out in nature and learn new things about the area that you live in.
