Oct 27, 2016Home and Garden: Some fun things to do during October
Contact Dee Smith at 634-3192 or howwwdeeee@embarqmail.com to reserve a space.
The last third Saturday workshop for this year will be at Latham-Whitehurst Park on Oct 15. It’s a walking tour on the nature trail titled “Wildlife Diversity from the Woodland to the Marsh.” To get there you take Broad Creek Road (on the way to Fairfield Harbour). It’s a left turn off that road and well marked. The address is 1095 Broad Creek Road.
The last third Monday tour for 2016 of the Cooperative Extension gardens is Oct 17 at 5:30 p.m. This is a walking tour featuring plants of interest (usually in bloom) discussed by Master Gardener volunteers.
Of course, there are still some gardening tasks to take care of this month (you wouldn’t want me to leave those out, would you?)
Turn off your irrigation system prior to the first freeze.
Put out plant markers before perennials die back, so you’ll know where not to step or dig during the coming winter.
Cut back perennials after frost (you may want to leave coneflowers and ornamental grasses to provide seeds for birds during the winter).
Bring in houseplants when night low temps start dipping into the 50s. (Make sure insects are not coming in from the cold on your plants though!)
Thoroughly clean garden sprayers prior to storage.
Fall is the best time to plant shrubs and trees in our area.
Do not prune flowering shrubs or feed plants that will be going into dormancy.
Set out transplants of cool-weather flowers (pansies, violas, snapdragons, ornamental cabbages) as well as cool-weather veggies.
If you’re saving seeds from your garden, allow them to completely dry and then store in a cool, dry location and out of direct sunlight.
Do not arbitrarily kill spiders as many are beneficial.
I hope you’re enjoying the cooler weather. I’m even taking a trip to the Yadkin Valley this month to tour some wineries and see the leaves changing color in that area!

Oct 21, 2016Arts and Flowers Garden Club get together
The October Garden of the Month is the home to Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Latham.
The next meeting will be held Nov.10 at the Washington Carnegie Public Library. The program will be “When and how to prune.”
Sheila O’Maley presented the program on papercrete pottery. This is a technique she learned in her Master Gardener’s class from Lee Coates. Because of the ingredients of Portland Cement and perlite the flower pots are lighter than other concrete pots. She provided instructions so members could make their own flower pots.
Also attending were Sue Colbert, Linda Cornelius, Helen Dashnaw, Sue Garrett, Kay George, Janet Goodwin, MaryLou Gotwald, Sue Gray, Sue Harper, Kathleen Harris, Jean Hoffman, Bonnie Jones, Shirley Jones, Becky Kremp, Tunia McClure, Linda Myers, Fran Neal, Rose Palmer, Jan Smith, Cheryl Thomas, Jan Wake, Joan Colbert and Coleen Swartzentruber.
