Festival of Flowers takes home prestigious award for topiary display

Festival of Flowers with an outstanding achievement award, beating out entrants from Castle Rock, Washington and Gallipolis, Ohio. Greenwood was the only South Carolina community to have ever participated in the contest, and its annual topiary display received a floor bloom rating out of five by America in Bloom judges. "We are excited to receive this kind of recognition, especially in our first year of participation. Greenwood has always exhibited civic pride and unity in their ongoing efforts to improve the area," Kelly McWhorter, executive director of the Greenwood Regional Tourism and Visitors Bureau, said in a press release. "We are blessed with beneficial partnerships and a strong teamwork attitude to make things happen here." The festival, which takes every June, is heading into its 50th year. Organizers announced in September that the 2016 event generated $3.3 million in revenue and drew 85,031 people. Angelle LaBorde, CEO of the Greenwood Area Chamber of Commerce and Festival of Flowers, traveled to Arroyo Grande, California with McWhorter to accept the award. "Through the development of the community profile in preparation for our inaugural year, we were educated and enlightened on the breadth and scope of our community volunteerism efforts in Greenwood," LaBorde said. Presented by Pastor Rick Barcus of Addison Freewill Baptist Church, the concert is free. A love offering is collected. ACCEPTED: Abigail Harman, gold medal winner three times in a row on the National Latin Exam, has been accepted into the Compass program through Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and has been chosen to go to Ireland. This summer's month-long program allows students to experience a 10-day trip hiking through the Adirondacks, 10-day seminary class work and then 10 days of international mission work. The program costs $4,500. Abigail's New Baptist Church family is excited she has answered the call to serve in missions. CHORUS: Dr. Larry Stickler directs the Hurricane Civic Chorus in a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, West Virginia. Kirkland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will take place two hours prior to the funeral at the funeral home. TOM WHEELER, 60, of Gallipolis, died Wednesday. He was the owner and operator of the Colony Theatre and Kanauga Drive In. Services will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Willis Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mound Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday. LETHA "LORETTA" WRIGHT SMITH, 86, of Ashland, widow of James A. Smith, died Wednesday at Community Hospice Center. She was a mother of five and a Kentucky Colonel. Funeral services will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitation for family will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and public visitation will begin at 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
