In full bloom: Hutchison family celebrates 50 years at Fisher's Florist

Colorful flowers can brighten anyone’s day, and the Hutchison family of Shippensburg has been delivering sunshine to area residents for the past 50 years.L. Max Hutchison and his late wife, Joan, moved to the area from Mount Union in 1967 to purchase Fisher's Florist on East King Street from Hubert and Rhea Fisher, who started the business in 1950.The couple raised their five children – Mark, Anne, Paul, Tim and Ruthie – in the house that connects to the shop, and ran it for 29 years before their son, Tim, took over and raised his family there with his wife, Stacy. The Hutchisons will celebrate 50 years of ownership with a Community Open House on Sept. 28, 29, and 30, during business hours.Starting his businessMax said he always enjoyed flowers, and especially enjoys daffodils that signal the start of spring, and fall chrysanthemums – his two favorite seasons of the year.“I got my feet wet in the floral business when I lived in Mount Union,” he said. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Royer's Flowers opens 16th store Tuesday

Royer’s traces its roots to 1937 when Hannah Royer grew and sold African violets in Lebanon County. The company in 2009 expanded floral deliveries to Shippensburg for the first time. The company annually collects items for area food banks. In six years Royer’s Stems Hunger has collected nearly 12,000 pounds of food. The Chambersburg store, located off Norland Avenue, will be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
